Read on to find the best USB flash drives to pick up today. The SanDisk Extreme CZ80 is a brilliantly priced USB drive that offers plenty. Because is so stingy with storage — you get just in the entry-level and — having a good external hard drive for Macs is important for offloading your large video and photo files. Better yet, a good external drive will let you create a full system backup copy of your drive.
![]() With dozens of external drive options, how do you find a good external hard drive for Mac? The hard drive answer starts with two key connectivity options: USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. USB 3.0 is a widely-used standard that will let you plug your hard drive into most any Mac or PC with a USB port. USB 3.0 is much faster than USB 2.0 (so avoid USB 2.0 drives). Thunderbolt is a newer connectivity standard for all Macs, and it’s useful for connecting different kinds of peripherals, including displays — even in a daisy chained way. For professional use, you can get excellent flexibility and speed, but for most people, in most situations, USB 3.0 will work great. Best External Hard Drive for Macs: Go Portable Next, I prefer to choose portable external hard drives over desktop versions because they are just so much easier to pack. In addition, I very much prefer bus-powered drives, that is, drives that will run off power from your USB 3.0 port or Thunderbolt port connections. That way you don’t need an external power cord to worry about. Solid State vs Hard Disk Drives Solid State Drives (SSD) are much faster than spinning Hard Disk Drives (HDD). SSD drives are usually more durable, too — but SSDs are much more expensive. For example, a 256GB SSD drive might cost close to $300 while a 1TB HDD drive can offer four times as much storage capacity for only $69. So why choose an SSD external drive? 1) You have the money, and 2) you plan to work with large video and photo files directly from your external drive. (For most people, though, the sheer value of an HDD drive usually wins out.) Formatting Notes To get the best performance out of an external drive for a Mac, you’ll want it to be formatted in the Apple HFS+ format, a.k.a. “Mac OS Extended, Journaled.” When you buy, look for HFS+.. And you’ll be good to go — just plug it in and start transferring files or backups. If you get a drive that is, say, formatted in FAT32, you can use it with your Mac but you might experience problems with iPhoto or Aperture photo files sometime down the road. If you’re totally Mac-focused, don’t mess with FAT32 and just use Disk Utility on your Mac to reformat the external drive before you use it (and then download an HFS+ driver for your Windows machine if you need to access the drive from Windows). But, you probably bought a Mac because it’s so easy, so just look for HFS+ from the start and save yourself the headache. Here’s Some Excellent External Hard Drive Options: — This USB 3.0 drive is super slim, portable, and you can usually get 1TB of storage at a compelling price point. — This USB 3.0 drive is portable and available in options up to 2TB of storage. — This whopping 4TB drive is not portable, comes with a separate power cord, but hey, it’s loaded with 4TB of space. — You get 120GB, but it’s super-fast SSD gigabytes. Ships unformatted, so you’ll have to format it first. — Both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt and 256GB of fast SSD speed, all in a portable, rugged enclosure. Consider the Ease of a USB Flash Drive Instead: The new USB 3.0 “thumb” drives based on solid state flash storage have grown in capacity while prices have fallen — so much so that they offer a rival option to larger SSD external drives. Mac users interested in Vlc player for mac 10.5.8 generally download: VLC media player 3.0 Free VLC media player is one of the most popular video players on the market. Mac installation files are named.dmg,.pkg, or.zip. If it’s a zip file, this will unpack the zip automatically into its own folder. If it’s not a zip file, skip to the next step. VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVC, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg.) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. Probably the nicest thing about VLC is the fact that it includes wide variety of video and audio codecs within the program itself, meaning that for most purposes, user doesn't have to install separate code packs in order to play videos or music on PC. Best os update for mac os x version 10.7.5. Ventura Publisher followed later on the PC platform, but it was late to the party and hindered by the poor graphics support then available for DOS. Best hardware for drawing on mac. I remember hearing about the screen being superior at least. I believe many years ago Mac were better suited to Graphic Design. As so often happens in a new market, being there firstest with the mostest is a huge advantage. Just as Visicalc had given a new lease on life to the Apple II a few years earlier, PageMaker created the DTP market for the Mac (which was selling very poorly at the time, mostly due to being very expensive and lacking useful, reliable applications). ![]() VLC can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. In the latest versions of OneNote -- specifically, our apps on Windows 10, Mac, iOS, Android, and OneNote Online -- your notebooks are stored in the cloud so you can access them from anywhere. ![]() ![]() I used to use a PC running Windows 7 and OneNote 2007. I now have a MAcBook Pro. I want to access a Onenote notebook created on the old PC on my MacBook Pro running Mavericks and OneNote for Macs v. 15.1 (downloaded from the Apple App Store for free). I found some instructions from MS and MOVED the location of my notebook to my OneDrive folder using OneNote program on my PC. Sure enough, it shows up on my OneDrive.com. I loaded the OneDrive app on my MacBook, and I can see this notebook there too using Finder. When I change the notebook on my PC, the same notebook in the OneDrive folder in my MacBook's Finder also changes. It is all syncing well. But, how do I get my OneNote app on the MacBook t o open this notebook. When I click File, then Open on my MacBook Onenote, it shows me a couple of notebooks I CREATED on my MacBook, but not the notebook from my PC. The notebooks I am seeing on my Mac's Onenote are on Onenote ONLINE on OneDrive.com. The notebook I want to open is a folder in OneDrive on OneDrive.com. How can I open this notebook in my MacBook OneNote app? Thanks, Mike T in Va. Alancito, No, the notebook I am trying to access is NOT in the Documents folder of the OneDrive folder. But the two notebooks which I created with the OneNote app on my Mac are in the Documents folder. And, I noticed that those Mac-created notebooks have the extension '.url'. The OneNote notebook created on my PC has an extension of '.one'. Two different file types. I think that might be the answer to my issue. The two OneNote programs -- the one that runs on a PC and the app that runs on the Mac --use entirely different formats. This led me to look for a file converter. I found on the Windows Forum this posting which might work: 'Thanks, Chris. I did load my OneNote files into OneDrive, which was installed on my Mac. I tried several strategies to open these files using my OneNote app for my Mac Book Pro. Ultimately, I purchased a subscription to Office 365. I opened and saved the OneNote files on my PC and stored the newly saved files in OneDrive. I was then able to open these files on my Mac.' Charlie ~ Welcome to the Support Communities. Having waited a bit to give Mike a chance to speak from experience, perhaps the theoretical steps below will help. But first, I don't know whether this is relevant to your situation: 1. On your PC in OneNote 2010 or 2013, convert your 2007 notebooks to the new format (see.) 2. On your PC in OneNote 2010 or 2013, 'share' those new format notebooks to OneDrive and wait for the automatic sync 'up' to complete (see.) 3. On your Mac, open OneNote for Mac and wait for the automatic sync 'down' to complete. Cdlunan wrote: Is there any particular destination where I should save those files on my Mac? The sync process in OneNote for Mac will save your notebook files in a special system location on your Mac — which shouldn't need to be known by the user. On OneDrive, your notebooks will be stored in the Documents folder where they can be managed here: and can be optionally viewed & updated in OneNote Online here. Not sure if I will get some sort of back lash here, nevertheless, I am going to post the answer to your question. While I am not a fan of windows platform, the reality is we (mac users) are in need of some windows based solutions. So, lets get off our high horse and get an answer out there, and sadly, an Office360 purchase is not necessary. I too have used and will continue to use OneNote. Currently using 2010 on a 2008 iMac running parallels with Windows 7. I have downloaded and use OneNote for Mac on my Pad and one of my macs. I too have been challenged with figuring out how to share notebooks across the two platforms given the programing limitations. So here it is for my Win OneNote 2010 version to Mac. Share the file from OneNote 2010: • File -> Share Notebook • Select Notebook to share • Select to share on Web • Select (onedrive) folder to share from. Suggested that you select Personal Folders->Documents. However, I use a different file folder on my onedrive.
